CINEMA IS A WOMAN* LECTURE TALK with Nadia Denton

Sa. 26. Oktober 2024, 11h - 13h

Join Nadia Denton as she explores the portrayal of womanhood in BEYOND NOLLYWOOD cinema. This lecture will highlight how Nigerian films delve into complex female experiences that challenge Western feminist frameworks.

The CINEMA IS A WOMAN* LECTURE TALK will be presented during the international film festival CINÉMA AFRICAIN!, which will take place for the first time in Linz from October 23-26, 2024. The festival showcases artistically innovative works from Africa and the African diaspora, while its supporting program provides space for discussions on social, political, and cultural issues. From intimate portraits to socially critical documentaries, the festival highlights diverse artistic expressions, particularly from the perspective of women. The venues include Moviemento Kino Linz, Kunstuniversität Linz, Stadtwerkstatt, and FIFTITU%.

BEYOND NOLLYWOOD

What My Eyes Have Seen, My Mouth Cannot Speak of
In Nigeria the term What My Eyes Have Seen, My Mouth Cannot Speak of is used to
describe a situation so troubling or filled with complexity that the person who witnessed it
would struggle to describe it. I will use this position to explore the experience of
womanhood as depicted in BEYOND NOLLYWOOD content showing how film has been
particularly effective in exploring the complexities of the female experience in west Africa.
BEYOND NOLLYWOOD, a term I coined in 2014 to refer to a new wave cinema from
Nigeria describes genres such art house and experimental films which have a distinct
filmmaking aesthetic in contrast to the more commercial Nollywood.
In this special lecture titled What My Eyes Have Seen, My Mouth Cannot Speak of I will talk
about and show examples of BEYOND NOLLYWOOD content to speak to feminine joy and
pain showing how these experiences do not neatly fit into a western feminist construct.
Attendees will learn how women from this part of the world bear the challenges of everyday
adversity to achieve remarkable triumph.
