Safe Abortion Day
September 28 is International Safe Abortion Day. Safe Abortion Day was first celebrated in 1990 by Campaña 28 Septiembre as a day of action for the decriminalisation of abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In 2011, the Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) declared 28 September an international day.
Since 2014, Safe Abortion Day has also been celebrated in Austria.
Since 2022, the "Alliance 28 September" has been networking throughout Austria around Safe Abortion Day to raise awareness of the issue. It calls for:
- Full decriminalisation of abortion
- Comprehensive access to abortions in all public hospitals with a gynaecology department
- Cost coverage by the public sector for insured and uninsured people
- End of stigmatisation
